Identified need / issue /opportunity

To increase the provision of Learning though Employment opportunities at the university and to enhance student employability. To give students who are already in employment the opportunity to study for a HE qualification without the need to choose between learning and earning.

Objectives

To develop curriculum provision for learning through employment

To enable academic staff to engage with employees, employers, sector skills councils and professional bodies

To provide responsive, flexible learning opportunities to employees, employers, sector skills councils and professional bodies

To enable students in employment to accredit their learning in the workplace as individuals or as participants in organisational and sectoral learning programmes

To address the regional employment and skills needs identified by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Brief description and what success will look like

Students in employment will be undertaking HE programmes via the Learning though Employment route and Students studying on HE programmes at the university via the traditional route will undertake one or two modules of their course via the Learning though Employment route.

Areas of the toolkit used

Glamorgan participated in an HEA Change Academy (CA) for a Learning Through Employment approach and therefore followed a project pathway rather than the WBL Maturity Toolkit (MT).  However, in looking at the five stages of the WBL MT the CA project mirrored many of the five stages.  For the CAMEL project we would be interested in the Actions Workshop.

The University of Glamorgan Glam Edge Certificate.

Potential barriers/risks

Academic and Employers not engaging with the project. Academics concerned about workload. Academics and Employers not successfully engaging with each other.

Key roles in your institution to engage with

Divisional Heads, Award/Scheme Leaders and Deans of Faculties.

Project news/updates

Date
Project news/updates
11/09/2012  As part of the Learning though Employment (LTE) Change Academy (CA) phase 2, The Operational Group (OG) met in order to discuss and plan how we might engage two faculties with the LTE modules and framework. This group was therefore ideally placed in order to test the ‘Action Workshop’ stage of the WBL maturity toolkit. Therefore, it was this group who were identified to take forward the changes and hence encourage academic staff to embed elements of LTE into their existing programmes. However, due to workload, it was decided that the participation of the faculty staff within the group would be ‘light touch’ and therefore the LTE team would do the majority of the work in engaging academic staff and therefore test this element of the WBL maturity toolkit.
23/10/2012  Following the OG meeting an action plan for the project was developed and put before the Steering Group (SG). The defined measure of success would be the number of academic staff who submitted an expression of interest in adopting LTE modules.
29/11/2012  LTE drop in session took place in order to further engage academic staff with LTE. This proved very successful and generated many expressions of interest from academics in using the LTE modules and framework.
07/12/2012 The deadline for first call for expressions of interest for CA LTE.

A very successful response.

14/12/12  For the second call, It was decided that we would re-visit the institutional structures, systems & champions which can take forward the changes as during the first call it became clear that due to the workload of academic staff, they were not in a position to devote significant amounts of time in engaging colleagues with LTE. It also became apparent that in using the Deans networks increased engagement could be sort.
16/01/2013  Second Call for LTE CA

Reflections

Lessons learnt - the process of using the toolkit

Don’t be afraid to ‘dip in and out’ of the toolkit and re-visit areas if necessary.

Ensure the right people have been chosen as champions and area able to commit the time needed for engagement.

Lessons learnt - relating to your project and WBL Ensure the right people have been chosen as champions and area able to commit the time needed for engagement.
Impact of the project
LTE has been successfully embedded into programmes at the university and the university has successfully engaged (working with accrediting learning) with new and existing employers.
How the project can be sustained and embedded
Continuation of embedding LTE into university programmes.

Developing additional LTE modules.
