Criterion 6-5 Assessment and Progressive Achievement
Main statement

The Assessment of learning outcomes is negotiated in terms of type, format and timing between the work-based learner and the Assessor.

Self assessment guidelines
  • Whilst learning outcomes are fixed, summative Assessment  type, activity,  timing and sequencing is negotiated between the WB Learner and the Assessor in accordance with work context, job role and taking into account conflicting work and personal priorities.
  • Assessment deadlines are negotiated with WB learners and where relevant their employers.
  • Evidence of attainment of learning outcomes is predominately drawn from the workplace where practicable and presented in evidence portfolios for assessor scrutiny.
  • Assessment is used formatively to provide learner feedback and inform dialogue about progress and review and updating of individual Personal Development Plans with tutors/assessors and employers.
  • Assessments are relevant to learning outcomes (both competence and capability-based)
  • Effective use is made of technologies in assessment to maximise cost and time efficiencies for employers, individuals and providers.
  • Assessment on demand is used to effectively accredit  prior knowledge and skills attained in work.
  • Assessment strategies make effective use of peer assessment, assessment on demand and RPL to provide opportunities to minimise time taken to complete WB programmes.
Evidence to look for
  • Examples of activities/decisions that have achieved costs and time efficiencies in assessment and feedback through the introduction of ICT.
  • Examples from your  WBL Programme that illustrates accelerated progression as a result of implementing assessment on demand policies, and recognition and accreditation of prior learning.
  • Examples from your WBL Programme that have enhanced support using WB assessors.
  • Examples from your WBL Programmes that illustrate effective use of negotiated assessment techniques.
  • Sample assessed work from WB learners that illustrate the assessment of learning outcomes situated in the context of an individual’s work environment and/or role in a company.
  • Examples from your WBL programme that illustrate the use of peer assessment effectively as part of the programme’s assessment strategy.
  • Examples of WB Assessment Portfolios illustrating how evidence of attainment of learning outcomes in the workplace is achieved and recorded.
